Building design by Nelson Partners, formerly Nelson Architects, and developed by Woodbine Development Corporation, Kierland Commons was the first lifestyle center in Arizona, consisting of outdoor stores and restaurants and residential units named the Plaza Lofts at Kierland Commons.
Construction began in 1995 and was completed in 2000, with the first stores opening during the same year. The concept centers around the theme of a small town main street where visitors stroll down sidewalks and browse through shops, or choose from a variety of restaurants from fine dining, to casual fare, or even just a sweet snack from either a candy or ice cream shop.

In February, 2007, a sale of one of the Plaza Lofts was, at the time, the highest recorded price per square foot in the State of Arizona. The unit sold for $1,051 per square foot.
Although officially located in Phoenix, Kierland Commons is adjacent to Scottsdale, which is used as their mailing address. In addition to the shops and restaurants, the Plaza Lofts are a group of 30 lofts, perched above the retail shops overlooking the main street. In 2008 a nine story tower adjacent to the main street completed construction offering an additional 54 residences, with the top floor of the tower boasting five penthouses ranging in size from 3,000 square feet to 3,900 square feet. These top floor units are treated to stunning city, mountain and desert views.
The Kierland Commons property also includes the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa located just across the street from the upscale retail shops and restaurants at Kierland Commons. The resort offers three golf courses, and a water park that boasts a 900 foot lazy river and a 110 foot water slide. The resort also offers an adult pool, cabanas, fitness facility including a hot tub, steam room and sauna, and a peaceful spa offering a variety of services and massage therapies. Guests may also choose from accommodations that range from casitas and suites, to generously sized rooms with upscale and luxury amenities. Visitors can choose from seven restaurants and bars where diners can enjoy dining inside or outside, a lifestyle Scottsdale is well known for.
The Plaza Lofts at Kierland Commons appeal to the most discerning owners. Both the tower and main street units have a reception lobby offering secure card access entry in addition to a secure parking garage. Residents also have access to the well-appointed fitness facility and two community rooms. One community room has a full kitchen and the second designed with a catering kitchen. A heated lap pool and spa, and a multi-level outdoor deck featuring a fire pit, gas barbecues seating areas and a water feature provides residents with a relaxing and rewarding experience.
Residents of the Plaza Lofts at Kierland Commons have anything but a common lifestyle. Retail shops and restaurants are accessed within moments. Whether walking, biking or traveling by car, residents are just a few minutes away from other retail and restaurant destinations and daily conveniences such as grocery shopping, salons and banking institutions. Access to the valley’s premiere event venues, museums, sports venues and casinos are all easily accessible as Plaza Loft residents live just a few minutes from the Loop 101 Freeway. Many of the valley’s golf courses, resorts, spas, hiking and biking trails can all be reached in under 15 minutes and Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport can be reached in under 30 minutes.
The Plaza Lofts at Kierland Commons are served by the Desert Shadows School System (Paradise Valley). There are also a variety of private schools from which residents can choose.
